This is a Purple Maple prior to topping. This particular tree was located in Jefferson Hills and was estimated to be around 33 years old.
Topping a tree eliminates all excess branches and provides a nice shape to the tree. The tree will begin growing smaller limbs during the next growth cycle to fill back out and regain foliage. Only specific species of tree are meant to be topped. The Purple Maple falls into that category.
